Portrait I am an experienced editor and proofreader of academic texts, having edited over one thousand journal articles, reports, grant applications, theses and dissertations, books, administrative documents, application letters and other texts for academics, graduate students, researchers and institutions. I edit manuscripts by writers of English as a first or second (or third, or fourth) language. I am an Australian native English speaker with a BA (Hons) and PhD from Monash University. I edit material in a wide range of fields across the social sciences and humanities. I am an APA specialist and am also comfortable applying any other style guide or publishers’ requirements for language and formatting. The feedback from academics who have chosen me to copyedit their work has been consistently positive, with 100 per cent of those I worked with through the (now closed) Peerwith researcher services portal giving 5 star reviews. I offer a highly professional, confidential, secure and ethical service and do not (and will never) use generative AI in my work. If you would like me to work on a document, please request a quotation. For more information or to contact me for any other reason, please send an e-mail.

How it Works

Typically, I will make changes to your document in Microsoft Word with the Track Changes function turned on. Where necessary, I will also leave comments to provide further advice or explain my suggested changes. After I return the edited document, you are welcome to contact me with any questions before finalising the document. I am happy to discuss other ways of working if the file is not easily convertible to Microsoft Word format.

Pricing and Payment

Special offer: 15% off for your first editing job. Use code FIRST15 I provide an individual quotation for each job, depending on how many words I expect to edit per hour. I give a discount on the hourly rate for dissertations and other large projects.

My quotations exclude VAT. No VAT is chargeable in the United Kingdom. For individuals living in other countries or regions that apply a value-added tax to services, the appropriate tax (if any) will be added to the invoice. For institutions with a valid VAT number, no tax will be charged.

Payment Methods

Powered by Stripe I use Stripe as my payment processor. You can pay securely online using any of the payment methods that Stripe supports in your country. An invoice and receipt will be provided, which can be used for reimbursement. Alternatively, my invoices include bank details for direct transfers, which are preferred by many institutions, and I am happy to charge your institution directly (including via an e-invoice). Unless you specify a currency, I will charge in EUR in the eurozone, GBP in the UK, AUD in Australia and USD elsewhere.

Privacy and Security

As I am not an agency, I am the only person who will see your work. I maintain strict confidentiality and am happy to sign confidentiality agreements if necessary. Manuscripts for editing are not uploaded to "The Cloud"; they are kept on my secure personal server and on an encrypted Backblaze backup. No portion of your work will ever be uploaded to any web service for processing. I am GDPR compliant and all personal details and files entrusted with me will be securely deleted on request.

Academic Ethics

To uphold academic ethics, I will not accept student work for editing except for theses and dissertations, for which special limitations will apply. I also do not offer a paraphrasing service and will not accept work that is substantially plagiarised from any source.

Here is some of the feedback I have received for my editing and proofreading work:

I've worked with Stephen as a proofreader for several papers and his work is always impeccable.

Academic in the humanities

Dr. Acreman did a great job with editing the article. Along with improving the language and structure of the paper, he also helped with adherence to the journal's guidelines.
